What is Information Privilege

Answer

What is information privilege?

Information privilege is the idea that access to information is based on status, finances, technology, location, and other factors. Even though it is easy to share and access information online, there is still an abundance of academic and peer-reviewed content only accessible to those who pay for it or have additional resources. This creates a disparity between those who have access to academic knowledge and those who do not. The inability to access information can impact your ability to complete assignments, strengthen your knowledge, and share information.

Information Privilege and the Library

The UMass Global Library subscribes to databases that require you to enter your UMass Global credentials. This is because the library is only allowed to provide access to students, faculty, and staff. If you need an article that the library does not have, you can request the article via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). We will request the article from another institution; however, an ILL request does not guarantee we can access an article.
